How Long Does Car Detailing Take? Real Times by Service

The short answer

A maintenance wash takes 3 to 5 hours. An interior detail takes 2 to 4 hours. A full interior-and-exterior detail takes 5 to 8 hours. Those are working times, not estimates padded for comfort, and they are the same windows we quote when you book. The single biggest driver is which service you chose, not what you drive.

Because we are mobile, that time is spent in your driveway while you get on with your day. You do not sit in a waiting room for any of it.

Time by service, side by side

Detailing is not one job with one clock. A wash is a wash; a full detail is a day of labor that happens to include a wash. Comparing the two is where most of the confusion about timing comes from.

Working time and starting price by service

A safe two-bucket hand wash is the fastest thing we do, and it is still an hour of contact time on a mid-size SUV.

Why a full detail takes most of a day

People are often surprised that a Full Detail runs six to nine hours. The reason is that almost none of it is washing. Clay-bar decontamination is done panel by panel, by hand, and it is slow on purpose. Hot-water extraction has to be followed by dry time. Sealant goes on one panel at a time and has to be leveled before it hazes. Steam cleaning a cabin means touching every vent, seam, and door jamb individually.

Add the parts nobody photographs, the wheel barrels, the seat tracks, the headliner spot-check, the sunlight walkaround at the end, and you have a full working day for one vehicle. When a shop offers a full detail in ninety minutes, they are skipping the steps that make the result last.

What makes your car take longer

Two identical bookings can run an hour apart. These are the honest reasons, and all of them are things we look at before we start so the time window and price are confirmed, not discovered halfway through.

  • Vehicle size. A third-row SUV has roughly twice the interior surface of a sedan and more panels to clay and seal.
  • Pet hair. Embedded hair is extracted in passes, not vacuumed once, and it can add an hour or more on its own.
  • Neglect. A car that has not been detailed in three years has bonded contamination and set-in stains that a six-month car does not.
  • Odor work. Ozone treatment needs a sealed cabin and dwell time, which is time nobody is working on the car.
  • Weather. Heat and direct sun force smaller work sections so products do not flash off before they are leveled.
  • Water and access. A tight garage or a shared parking area slows setup and movement around the vehicle.

How to plan the day around a mobile detail

The advantage of mobile detailing is that the hours belong to you, not to a waiting room. A few things make the day go smoothly.

  1. 1Book the long services early. A Full Detail is a full-day job, so a morning arrival keeps everything in daylight.
  2. 2Leave the car where it can stay put. Moving a vehicle mid-detail costs time and risks marring fresh sealant.
  3. 3Clear personal items out first. Ten minutes of your time saves us twenty and keeps your things in your hands.
  4. 4Plan around the drive. A freshly sealed car is best left to sit for a couple of hours before it sees rain or a highway.
  5. 5Book a maintenance wash on a workday. At under an hour, it fits inside a lunch break at the office.

If you only have an hour

Not every car needs a full day. A maintenance wash at 3 to 5 hours keeps a well-kept car protected between deep details, and it is the reason recurring schedules exist: the car is simply kept from ever getting to the point where it needs the long service.

That is the real time trade. Frequent short visits or occasional long ones. Both work. Doing neither is what turns a three-hour job into a nine-hour one.

Common questions

  • A Full Detail at Pegazos takes 5 to 8 hours for a typical vehicle, because , hot-water , steam cleaning, and hand-applied are done panel by panel and section by section. A lighter Full Detail takes 5 to 8 hours.

  • An Interior Detail takes 2 to 4 hours, and that includes the steam, the hot-water and the fabric coating. Add the exterior and the whole car takes 5 to 8 hours.

  • No. We need access to the vehicle and a safe place to work beside it. Most customers let us in, hand over the keys, and get on with their day. We text you when we are 15 minutes out and again when the car is finished with the before-and-after photos.

  • It is not that the work is faster, it is that your time is not spent on it. There is no drive to a shop, no waiting room, and no second trip to collect the car. The same six hours of labor costs you zero hours of your day.
