The short answer
Take the mats out and clean them separately. Vacuum the carpet thoroughly, agitate with a brush to lift embedded grit, then use a controlled amount of cleaner and extract it back out. Dry with airflow until the padding is dry, not just the surface.
The single most common mistake is over-wetting. Car carpet sits on foam over a metal floor with no ventilation underneath, so water that goes in and does not come out has nowhere to go except into a mold problem.
Why vacuuming alone does so little
Most of what makes car carpet look dirty is grit that has worked down to the backing, below where suction reaches. It is also what wears the carpet out, because every footstep grinds those particles against the fibers.
The professional order is compressed air first to lift the grit up out of the pile, then vacuum, then wet cleaning. Doing it in that order removes several times more than vacuuming alone.

Drying, which is half the job
Get air moving across the carpet and leave the doors open if you can. A fan pointed into the footwell for an hour does more than a whole afternoon parked in the sun with the windows up, which mostly steams the moisture into the headliner.
Press a dry towel into the carpet and lean on it. If it comes back damp, the padding is still wet. In a humid North Texas spring that can take a full day, which is why professional interior work uses air movers rather than hoping.
The trunk and spare well
Trunk carpet gets the same treatment as the cabin and almost never receives it, which is why a car can smell faintly musty with a spotless interior.
- Empty it completely, including the side cubbies most people forget exist.
- Lift the floor panel and check the spare well, which collects water from a failed seal or a leaky taillight gasket.
- Vacuum the well and the seal channel around the trunk opening.
- Extract the trunk carpet if anything has ever leaked or spilled in it.
- Dry it thoroughly before putting the floor panel back, since a closed trunk holds moisture indefinitely.
