The short answer
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer, usually based on silicon dioxide, that is applied to clean paint and cures into a thin, hard, transparent layer chemically bonded to the clear coat. It is not a wax sitting on top: it becomes a semi-permanent surface with its own properties.
What it gives you is a slick, strongly water-repellent surface that resists chemical etching and UV, stays cleaner between washes, and lasts years rather than months. What it does not give you is scratch immunity.

Ceramic coating: claims versus reality
Prep is the entire job
A coating locks in whatever is underneath it. Applied over bonded contamination it seals the contamination in. Applied over swirl marks it seals the swirls in and makes them harder to correct later, because you have to remove the coating first.
That is why a legitimate coating job is mostly preparation: decontamination, then polishing to remove defects, then panel wipe, then application in a controlled environment. If someone quotes a coating as a two-hour job, they are describing a spray sealant.
Should you get one
It is a genuinely good product for the right car: paint in good condition, an owner who keeps the vehicle for years, and a willingness to maintain it properly. It is a poor purchase on neglected paint that has not been corrected, or on a lease returning in a year.
We do not install multi-year coatings, so we have no reason to push you either way. What we will tell you is honestly whether your paint is a candidate, and what a sealant would do instead.

What happens if you never maintain one
Coatings do not fail dramatically. They degrade quietly, and the failure mode surprises people because the car still looks coated for a while after it has stopped behaving like it.
Neglected, the hydrophobic behavior flattens first, then contamination begins bonding on top of the coating rather than releasing from it, and finally the surface holds water spots and traffic film the way bare paint does. At that point the coating has to be polished off before anything new can bond, which is why maintenance is not optional in the way owners assume.
